  • Caro Bowl Final 2009 - West End and Parnell Take Titles

The women’s decider had Royal Oak hosting Parnell also in front of a big crowd. Royal Oak had led all the way through the season. Defending champs, Parnell had won 11 out of the past 14 years of women’s Caro Bowl and had started the season slow. However the experience of the still world-ranked Franziska Etzel from Germany at No1, former top 80 ranked Pavlina Nola and former Kiwi No1 Rewa Harriman(nee Hudson) in the top three singles was the key for Parnell as they won their final 4-2 over Royal Oak.
The doubles were shared as Nola and Harriman defeated Angela Swinkels and Rachel Dive but Royal Oak gaining a victory with teenagers Leela Beattie and Emily Fanning defeating Etzel and Libby Scott in straight sets. In the singles Beattie, 15 gave Etzel a run for her money but the German who surprisingly hasn’t been used to hit with the nations best players came through 7-5 7-6. The talent of Fanning, 14 could be seen but experience counted for Nola who was able to change the pace against her inexperienced counterpart to win 6-4 6-4. Harriman won the No3 singles over Swinkels while Dive gained a match for Royal Oak winning against Scott in straight sets.
Traffic jams proved costly for Parnell in the men’s Scarbro Caro Bowl tennis final while experience worked in favour for the Parnell women’s team in their final.
With a large crowd number of over 500 the Parnell men’s side were hoping to defend their title at home against West End. They started in the worst possible way with No2 Andrew Batie not making it to the courts as a result of traffic congestion and lax time keeping within the 15 minute margin and was then duly defaulted as he was at least 10 minutes after the latest deadline.

Batie’s delay meant a 6-0 6-0 bonus for West End in the bottom doubles. The top match being a win for West End thanks to Mark Nielsen and former South African pro Wesley Whitehouse beating Matt Prentice and Steve Downs. The two doubles victories meant a near-impossible task for Parnell to win all four singles. All they managed was a tight three set victory in the No1 singles as Prentice defeated Adam Thompson. The remaining singles were all won by West End in straight sets. The win by West End stopped the run by Parnell which had seen them win the past four years running since West End’s last triumph.

  • Caro Bowl at "The Oak"

    What is Caro Bowl?
Caro Bowl is Auckland’s top Interclub competition. It took its name from the trophy “Maurice S Caro Memorial Bowl” which was donated in memory of the late Maurice S Caro, who was killed in action on the 2nd of July 1916 in the first battle of Somme (WW1).You will notice the ladies' trophy only has results from 1990 onwards displayed on it, this is because until then, the Mens' and Ladies' Caro Bowl had been played together so only the one trophy (now the mens' trophy) was presented.

In the current era of Caro Bowl, the club looks to create a pathway for tennis players to progress and develop their skills from junior interclub level through to senior level and the pinnacle of the interclub format, Caro Bowl. We pride ourselves on not only the standard of tennis that our elite players reach but also in the quality of their character. Royal Oak team members are notoriously loyal and true ‘Club Members’.

In recent years the ladies team has made the final 11 out of the last 12 years and has seen players such as Rewa Hudson, Irena Yarikova, Abigail Guthrie and this year will see young Tennis NZ stars Leela Beattie and Emily Fanning fill the top positions in the team. The balance of the team will be Nicola Kaiwai, Angela Swinkels, Rachel Dive and Kirby Wotherspoon.

The Mens team has consistently fielded a strong team which has seen NZ’s most successful professional tennis player, Brett Steven, take the court for The Oak both as a junior and senior player more recently. Other players of note are James Greenhalgh, Teo Susnjak, Willie Laban to name a few. For the past 7 years the team has been based around local legend Andrew Allan and he will be accompanied in 2009 by Kiril Tchervenaichki, Wei Wei, Scott Winnard, Jaden Grinter and Bryce Hayr.

  • PRINCE Royal Oak Ladies finish top of the Table

With one round still to play, the Royal Oak Ladies team have a large points lead and are guaranteed to finish in 1st place even though they have a bye this week.

Friday night saw them take out 2nd place Kohi 6/0. Kohi were missing a couple of their regular team members but Royal Oak’s number 1, Leela Beattie, continued her unbeaten run by grinding out a tough 3 set win against for professional and Fed Cup player, Tracy O’Connor. Beattie found herself down 4/6 0/3 but held her composure and covered a lot of court to take the match 7/5 in the 3rd set. Emily Fanning put in another professional performance as she shut down Heidi Stewart 6/1 6/1. The number 3 and 4 singles and 2nd doubles were claimed for Royal Oak by the ever consistent veterans of the team, Nicola Kaiwai, Angela Swinkels and Rachel Dive.

The next home match for the girls will be in the semi finals on Friday November 20th where its sudden death and a loss means you are out of the competition. The likely opponents will be Remuera but final placings won’t be determined until after next weeks final round robin matches.

The ASB Royal Oak men notched up a 6/0 win over Pompallier with some outstanding performances from the team. Next week will see them taking on tournament leaders West End at home. All matches will be tough and it’s a great opportunity to come down and support the club and watch top class tennis at the same time.
